While it is true that anyone can become a personal trainer, there are some key characteristics that make the difference between an average personal trainer and an exceptional fitness professional:

  • Outgoing and friendly personality
  • Enthusiasm for your profession and for continuously learning
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Charisma and Energy
  • An extensive knowledge of fitness and an in depth knowledge of your area of expertise
  • The ability to teach and help your clients learn
  • Listening skills
  • Conversational skills
  • Motivational skills

And last but by no means least you will need

  • Business Skills

Getting your PT qualification is the just the first step and becoming a great Personal Trainer is important but if you want to be your own boss and build up your own successful business as a Personal Trainer there is another   characteristic that will be invaluable to you...a head for business:

Some of the characteristics include:

  • Willingness to learn about the business side of your profession
  • Being prepared to move out of your comfort zone
  • Being prepared to do the difficult and challenging activities and not just those you find easy and fun.
  • Determination
  • Focus
  • Discipline
  • Willingness to make mistakes, learn and move onwards
  • Readiness to work on yourself as well as your business

Each of these skills and characteristics will contribute to your success as a Personal Trainer. Don’t worry if you don’t have them all. They will be developed and mastered over time as you experience life in the Personal Training profession.
