Exercise Referral Specialist Course
Leading to CYQ Level 3 Diploma in Exercise Referral
There is now overwhelming evidence to support the belief that physical exercise and activity is important in maintaining general good health. Conversely, physical inactivity is strongly linked to physical and mental health problems and, as the general population becomes more sedentary both in work and at home, the incidence rate of serious health problems is ever increasing.
More GP’s find themselves dealing with individuals who present multiple associated conditions. By referring to exercise, these conditions can be dealt with simultaneously whilst reducing the need for medication. More suitably trained exercise professionals are needed to cater for the rising number of GP’s referring people into exercise.
Why should I do this course?
You will gain the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to plan, deliver, manage and evaluate safe, effective and progressive physical activity programmes for referred clients with specific controlled conditions. You will learn the signs, symptoms and basic pathology of specific controlled conditions and how the medication associated with these conditions can affect your client. You will learn how to design progressive exercise programmes taking into account physical, emotional and medicinal contraindications to meet an individual’s needs.
This course is for fitness professionals looking to develop referral schemes for fitness facilities or if you are looking to develop your personal knowledge of the subject area. If you are working towards a Specialist Personal Training Diploma or wish to achieve Level 4 REPs status.
How is the course delivered?
You will be required to complete a series of home study units prior to attending a two day practical course attendance. Here you will learn the practical and theoretical skills behind programme design and implementation. You will then have six weeks to complete a case study and submit this for assessment prior to attending a third day for your practical assessment.

What do I need?
- Students must be 16 or over,
- Students must hold CYQ L2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (GYM, ETM, AQUA)
Learners who have already completed the Level 3 Personal Trainer will be exempt from undertaking the Anatomy & Physiology for Exercise and Health theory examination and the Nutritional element of the course. Conditions apply, please contact a course advisor for more details

- How to collect and use information relating to nutrition, the relationship between nutrition and physical activity, the principles and guidelines relating to nutrition and nutritional goal setting, and the nationally recommended practice to provide nutritional advice.
- Collecting information to plan an exercise referral programme, the principles of risk stratification in exercise referral.
- Instruct, adapt, and review exercise sessions with exercise referral patients.
- Current UK healthcare systems, the exercise referral process, the roles and responsibilities of professionals within an exercise referral scheme, the role and importance of exercise referral, related policies and key documents
- Accepted methods of treatment/management of medical conditions relevant to exercise referral programmes, clinical features of medical conditions relevant to exercise referral programmes
- How to programme safe, effective exercise programmes for patients with specified exercise referral medical conditions
